Generous giving supports foodbank |
|
During 2010-11 we fed almost 2,250 adults and nearly 900 children. There has been a substantial increase in numbers compared to this time last year - 10% increase in adults and nearly 16% increase in children requiring emergency food parcels. Continuing to meet the growing need is only possible due to the high level of support we have received through food donations from Gloucester people.
During the 2010 Harvest Festival 38 schools donated almost 5 tons of food which enabled us to provide emergency food for a further 3 and half months.
Throughout the year 23 churches have donated both food and money either on a one off basis or on a weekly basis. During 2011 we are collecting at Sainsbury's Barnwood and the Quays plus Morrisons in Abbeydale. At an average supermarket collection shoppers donate approximately 500-600kg of food.
Asda, Sainsbury and Morrisons have allowed foodbank volunteers to collect food from their customers this year. At an average supermarket collection shoppers have donated 500-750kg of food.
Without this ongoing support many adults and children would have gone hungry during their time of crisis, some may have resorted to other means to feed themselves and their families. Anyone of us in this current financial climate could be just one wage packet away from a crisis.
All the staff and volunteers at the foodbank would like to say thank you Gloucester on behalf of their clients. |
